Calderón Hondo: an easy volcano hike in Fuerteventura

An accessible volcanic hike near Lajares

Calderón Hondo is one of the most popular short hikes in northern Fuerteventura. The route offers a strong sense of the island’s volcanic landscape without requiring an all-day expedition.

Terrain and footwear

The path is generally straightforward, but volcanic gravel can be loose and uneven. Wear shoes with grip rather than smooth-soled casual footwear. A hiking pole is optional, not essential, for most experienced walkers on the easier approach.

Sun and wind

There is little shade. Carry water, sunscreen and a hat that can handle the wind. The upper section can feel significantly windier than the starting area, so a light windproof layer is useful.

The crater view

The reward is a broad view across the surrounding volcanic cones and northern Fuerteventura. Stay on established paths and treat exposed edges with respect, particularly in strong wind.

• Start with enough water.
• Use an offline map if you are unfamiliar with the route.
• Avoid the hottest part of the day when practical.
• Do not leave the marked or established path unnecessarily.

How long should you allow?

Allow more time than the pure walking distance suggests. Stops for photographs and views are part of the experience. Calderón Hondo is best treated as an easy half-day excursion rather than something to squeeze into a rushed schedule.
