What shoes to wear in Fuerteventura: beach, hiking and everyday walks

The footwear you will actually use in Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura may look like an island where flip-flops are enough, but the ground changes quickly. In a single day you can walk on soft sand, volcanic rock, pavements, dusty tracks and uneven coastal paths. Packing three useful types of footwear is usually better than bringing many pairs you never wear.
Sandals or flip-flops
A comfortable pair is ideal for the beach, pool and short walks. If you plan to spend time on promenades, choose something with a little support rather than a very thin sole. Water shoes can also be useful around rocky coves, although they are not necessary on every beach.
Light trainers for everyday use
For Corralejo, Puerto del Rosario, El Cotillo or Morro Jable, breathable trainers are extremely versatile. They work well for driving, shopping, walking through towns and easy excursions. Dust is common in dry and windy conditions, so very pale shoes may need regular cleaning.
Hiking footwear
For Calderón Hondo, volcanic trails, ravines or exposed viewpoints, grip matters more than style. Easy routes may only require good trail shoes, while longer or rougher routes benefit from more support. Whatever you choose, wear the shoes before the trip rather than breaking them in on your first hike.
- Avoid completely smooth soles on volcanic ground.
- Use comfortable, moisture-managing socks.
- Carry blister plasters on longer walks.
- Shake sand out of shoes before long drives.
A simple packing formula
For most travellers, sandals, comfortable trainers and hiking shoes if needed cover almost every situation. That combination lets you move easily from Grandes Playas to Lajares and finish the day with dinner in Corralejo without overthinking what is on your feet.
