Packing for a hike in Fuerteventura

Walking in Fuerteventura means dry landscapes, strong sunlight and often plenty of wind. You do not need a huge backpack, but you do need the essentials. Water, sun protection, reliable footwear and a light wind layer solve more problems than carrying lots of unnecessary equipment.

Water comes first

Many routes have no shops or refill points. Carry enough for the length of the walk, temperature and effort, plus a sensible reserve. Do not rely on one small bottle for an entire group.

Dress in light layers

A breathable top, a light extra layer and a windproof shell are more flexible than one heavy garment. Exposed ridges can feel cool while the sun remains intense.

Footwear for volcanic ground

Loose stones and abrasive rock reward good grip. Comfortable trail shoes are enough for many easy routes, while more demanding walks may justify additional support. Wear your footwear before the holiday.

  • Sunscreen and a secure hat.
  • Phone with enough battery.
  • Offline map or downloaded route.
  • Small first-aid kit and blister plasters.
  • Snacks.
  • A bag for your rubbish.

Wind and navigation

Wind can slow your pace and make an exposed section feel harder than expected. Some landscapes also have few obvious landmarks, so do not depend entirely on mobile coverage. Keep the route available offline.

Before you leave

Check the forecast, daylight hours and route conditions. Turning back is not a failed hike. On an island this photogenic, photo stops can easily add time, so always leave enough margin to return comfortably before dark.
