Calderón Hondo with kids: an easy volcano walk in Fuerteventura

A family-friendly way to see Fuerteventura’s volcanic landscape

Calderón Hondo, near Lajares, is one of the island’s most accessible volcanic walks and can work very well for families. The route is relatively straightforward, but “easy” still means preparing for sun, wind and uneven volcanic ground.

Before starting

Bring water, sun protection and proper shoes. Children who are comfortable walking on paths will usually enjoy the changing landscape, but younger children may need more breaks than the distance suggests. The open terrain also means there is little natural shade.

Wind changes the experience

At higher and more exposed points, the wind can feel much stronger than it did near the car. Keep hats secure and stay close to younger children near viewpoints. If the wind becomes unpleasant, turning around is always a sensible option.

Make the walk interesting

Instead of presenting the route as a long climb, break it into small goals: the next bend, a view of the surrounding cones, a short water stop and finally the crater. This keeps the walk enjoyable and gives children a reason to keep looking around.

• Use closed shoes with grip.
• Carry more water than you think you will need.
• Avoid the hottest part of the day when possible.
• Do not let children run near steep or exposed edges.

Combine it with Lajares

After the walk, Lajares is an easy place to stop for food or a drink. That makes Calderón Hondo a good half-day family plan: a manageable hike, a memorable volcanic view and a relaxed stop afterwards.
